water features
Most permaculture experts recommend 15% of land mass be in water features. Given we have 15 acres of mountain terrain we will never be able to accomplish this, but we have been consciously increasing water features over the last couple years. In the few permaculture classes I have taken, the instructors say it does not matter how big or small the features are as they all enhance the biodiversity and any increase in biodiversity is beneficial.

The sink is a bird bath. As soon as we move more rocks around the property I will surround it and cover up some of the plastic ugly.
This is down in the bowl area where there is quite a bit of run off when it rains heavy so we made an overflow down to a swale that is also on a slope. Once the flowers grow this summer it should all look quite nice. I will continue to expand the garden there and we will likely work toward a few more swales and possibly another small water feature.

There is some good junk here to recycle, but I'm not as creative as you are to make it look decent. Do you have any suggestions for a huge cast iron bath tub, an old cast iron sink & about 20+ ft of wooden ladder. The ladder will go be used in vertical gardening when just can't find the perfect place to put it yet. The tub & sink will bring a few $ for scrap if we don't use them, but besides rain barrels we have very few water features here. You seem to come up with good functioning placement of your 'stuff'. We have a little under one acre that is getting full so is hard to move things around.

ReplyDeleteThe tub would make a rockin water mess.. even if you dont bury it it can grow watercress or other water plants.. we have one we are still in limbo with since self cant get watercress to grow for nuttin :/
they also make good deep planters for sweet or regular taters.. for regular taters you can start nearly empty n fill as you go.. you could also do an hugulkulture type bed in the tub and make soil from that.. kinda like we do in the hot tub...
the sinks would be watery bird critter baths.. they are easy to bury in small places and hide among the plants n stuff.. they can also be perched or tied to trees and done..
the ladder ..there are lots of ideas for them.. just saw a post somewhere with a bunch of uses.. i would chop it down n make other things from itlike a mini trellis to my hobbit garden or make a ladder garden .. i will find the ladder post and pass it on..
